The Educator’s Guide to Teaching Fundamental Movement Skills book has been designed as a resource for post secondary students who are in the discipline ofphysical education, kinesiology, recreation and leisure, and education. Teachers, leaders, and coaches may also use the resource and adapt the activity ideas to suit each particular situation. The book pertains to pre-adolescent children who are in the Active Start, FUNdamentals, and Learningto Train stages of the Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) program. This book is designed to provide the following:
- A description of the mature movement pattern for the fundamental motor skills;
- Specific tips to help the teacher develop these motor skills in their students;
- A number of activities that utilize motor skills;
- Targets movement educators of pre-adolescent children;
- Builds on foundational loco-motor, stability, and manipulative skills that have been developed in the Active Start and FUNdamentals stages;
- Emphasizes more advanced (specialized) elaborations and combinations of movement skills that can be applied or transferred to a variety of sport,recreational, or active living settings such as dance, gymnastics, games, track and field, fitness and outdoor adventures;
- Broadens its focus beyond skill development by integrating developmentally appropriate knowledge and understanding (e.g., skill cues and characteristics, tactical decision-making) with emotional (e.g., self-control), motivational (e.g.,perceived competence), social (e.g., life skill such as respect) and spiritual (e.g., meaning joy) outcomes; and,
- Transitions to more sport-specific qualities.
- Provide adaptations for children with physical and developmental disabilities.
The resource aims to assist with planning and delivering quality learning experiences that support the development of fundamental and specialized skills.
