This introductory resource is for you, the organizers who are interested in providing intramural programs at your school or community recreation facility. At school, most often it is Physical Education teachers and athletics staff coordinators who meet the challenge of developing and implementing intramural programs. However, more and more often other staff, parent volunteers and student leaders are becoming involved in providing increased physical activity opportunities and fun! This resource sets out to quickly orient and introduce the reader to the many experiences for students and the components of an intramural program. This guide will help you design and launch a new intramural program, or enhance an existing program.
Over time, staff within a school will change, as will the composition of the student body. Accordingly, the school's intramural program must be adapted to suit changing needs. This resource provides tools to help the organizers review and analyze the current intramural landscape within their schools, so they can design and provide activities that meet their needs.
The primary focus of any intramural program should always be on the participation and enjoyment of all people involved. Keeping your gymnasium, school grounds and fields busy and filled with active students will help you achieve these desired outcomes. In addition, the active participation of students will help them to develop a variety of skill sets, including organization skills and leadership skills. Students at all grade levels can contribute to intramural program development and operation.
This resource will:
- Provide a brief outline of all aspects of a comprehensive intramural program.
- Include a framework for the planning and implementation of intramural programs for elementary and secondary schools.
- Offer a curriculum support document for student leadership programs.
- Assist intramural organizers to perform an informal review of current programs.
- Provide additional resources and reference materials.
