This resource was developed by a group of students in a leadership program who saw a need for a resource that would help other students successfully plan and convene intramural activities. This is an excellent resource that can be used by the intramural activity coordination team and within student leadership programs, as it takes students through a 12-step process of coordinating sports, physical activities, and special events. School intramural activities vary significantly from one school to the next. The primary focus of any intramural program should always be to promote the participation and enjoyment of all people involved. Keeping your gymnasium busy and filled with active students will help you meet the desired aims and objectives of any program. In this resource, the common element to many of the activities is a high level of student involvement. This includes not just participating, but also helping to coordinate, organize and lead a wide variety of activities, including sports leagues, tournaments, fitness activities and general game play. Some activities may be based on a special theme. Other activities may be used to create awareness of the importance of active living, or be used as a fundraising activity for specific purposes or groups. A vibrant intramural activity program is a great way to promote physical activity, school spirit and provide opportunities to have fun. All members of the school community – administrators, educators, custodians, parents and students – can come together to celebrate school spirit in an amazing number of ways. With more schools providing student leadership programs, students are practicing and developing their skills by organizing intramurals. More students are contributing their efforts and creativity to help schools provide unique, extraordinary activities.
