A school carnival is a co-curricular festival that takes place during a specific time fram within a school year. A carnival can be classified as special days, one of four sub-dimensions of an intramural program in a Quality Physical Education Program.
Based on intramural philosophy, the primary purpose of a carnival is to complement the other three dimensions: leagues (tournaments) meets; clubs and self-directed activities. Other intentions depend on the school, the community, and the human resources. These intentions may include any of the following:
- To celebrate a season or a specific occasion
- To increase school spirit
- To develop positive attitudes towards participation
- To develop and utilize special interests and abilities of students and staff
- To provide an opportunity for students to apply leadership skills
- To test new games and activities
- To develop an awareness of active living that can be carried out anywhere anytime
- To raise funds
