What do we need to do?

  • Ensure that all schools meet national standards of at least 150 minutes of physical education per week for ALL children and youth attending primary and secondary schools.
  • Develop hiring policies that recognize the importance of employing qualified physical education specialists.
  • Provide teachers with the appropriate professional development they need to effectively deliver quality physical education programs that help students achieve provincial curriculum standards and expectations to become physically literate.
  • Give our schools the necessary physical and knowledge-based resources they need to provide an inclusive quality physical education program for ALL children.
  • Encourage participation in a wide variety of physical activities (e.g., dance, gymnastics, fitness, games, individual, outdoor) within physical education classes.
  • Provide Quality Daily Physical Education (QDPE) programs under the umbrella of a Health Promoting School so that students will have both the physical and social supports needed to apply their knowledge and understanding about healthy active lifestyles.

If we hope to prevent dire public health consequences for future Canadians, the time to act is NOW!  We can help make this a reality.
