FUNDAMENTAL MOVEMENT SKILLS

In support of Canadian Sport for Life (CS4L):

The Fundamental Movement Skills Series (FMS) is designed for generalist, physical education specialists and community coaches to assist in teaching fundamental motor and sport skills in an effective, fun and interactive manner.

The CS4L Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model is a seven stage model that provides a framework of athlete development from 0-19+ years of age. The first three stages - Active Start, FUNdamentals, and Learning to Train, focus on developing children’s physical literacy (movement skills).

PHE Canada provides 3 handbooks that have been designed to identify developmental information for each motor skill, provide suggestions about how to move children along the developmental continuum for each motor skill and then list activities that utilize each of the motor skills.

Each FMS print handbook includes the specific characteristics; description of movement patterns; still photographs; cue words and phrases; an assessment/evaluation and a list of games/activities; collectively, providing the theory and practice to teach fundamental motor and sport skills.

ON-LINE VIDEO TEACHING TOOL

To supplement all three resources a video library of these skills will be available online using a video platform.  Users can access the video library to support instruction in all learning environments.

The on-line teaching tool allows users to:

  • view each motor or sport skill in video in two different views (frontal and lateral),
  • view each motor or sport skill in early, intermediate and mature stages of development
  • view still shots of each skill’s key positions
  • download handouts that profile the key positions, characteristics and cue words

Together the print manuals and on-line platform creates a user-friendly, multi-sensory teaching tool for both the teacher/coach and the students.
