PHE Canada recently wrapped on a pilot program, Active Living After Schools, after over-whelming demand for resources to help plan and execute an program to fill this time period. Working with GoodLife Kids Foundation, we piloted an After School resource and provided training to assist organizations in creating quality after school programs with a focus on moderate to vigorous physical activity and healthy eating.

There are some ground-breaking initiatives going on in classrooms across Canada. Technology is becoming more prevalent in the classroom and phys-ed and health teachers are using this platform and integrating it into their teachings. They are going above and beyond by offering solid physical education pedagogy and are teaching children and youth fundamental movement skills, fostering an inclusive environment, and nurturing the best practices for living a healthy lifestyle. And not least of which, they are imparting the joy of getting out and moving.

It’s time for parents to realize that the obesity buck stops with them - at least according to a bold new public health initiative in Georgia. Created by Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, the Strong4Life campaign (link) is a hard-hitting response to a survey that revealed that 75 per cent of parents with overweight kids didn’t see the emotional and physical toll it was taking on them.

On November 28, 2011, PHE Canada attended a launch event in London, Ontario celebrating the Canadian release of the AstraZeneca Young Health Program (YHP). This program is a global, long-term community investment by AstraZeneca that aims to improve the health of vulnerable people around the world – now and into the future.

We are coming to the end of the Leading the Way Student Leadership Workshops, a pilot program that has empowered students to create positive physical activity changes in their school and communities. Since the first workshop piloted on October 18, 2010, over 45 schools across Ontario and Saskatchewan have participated in this program.

For the first time we face the possibility that a generation will pass away before their parents. Childhood obesity rates are climbing, and physical activity and sport participation levels are decreasing. Children today spend more time in front of a television or computer screen than kicking the soccer ball around.

I’ve been reading a lot of lately about banning sugary drinks and unhealthy snacks from vending machines in schools. The approach on how to tackle this situation varies world-wide, from some areas outright banning all junk food and some countries having no rules at all.

Yesterday I came across an interesting article on a great initiative that an elementary school in Brantford, Ontario was spearheading. This school had swapped out the kids’ classroom chairs for exercise balls.
