Virtual Hall of Fame
Born and raised in the prairie city of Edmonton, Hebert John McLachlin graduated from McGill University with a B.Sc. in Physical Education following service as an RCAF pilot in World War II. He returned to Edmonton to join Maury Van Vliet’s young staff at the University of Edmonton in 1948 – a staff which assembled a modern curriculum and an excellent athletic program, and which built a foundation upon which the current Faculty was established. It was necessary in those early days for Herb to teach in the wide range of skills that were to become his hallmark. He taught in divers areas, such as anatomy, kinesiology, administration, teaching methods, and a variety of sports activities. He also served as Director of Intramurals and coached a number of sports at the intercollegiate level.
Having earned his M.A. at the University of Washington and his Ph.D. at the University of Oregon, Herb was named Associate Dean of the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation at the University of Alberta in 1969 and Dean in 1976. Upon retirement in 1984, he became Professor Emeritus, Physical Education.
Herb McLachlin has given long and dedicated service to CAHPER during his 36-year membership as President of the Edmonton CAHPER branch; Program Chairman for the 1959 CAHPER National Conference; as a member of the Board of Directors from 1965-69; Vice-President, Finance; General Chairman for the “Sixth Commonwealth Conference for Sport, Physical Education and Recreation”, 1978; and President of CAHPER in 1979-80.
Herb has made a significant contribution to many other organizations, as President of the “Health and Physical Education Council of Alberta”, of the Canadian Council of University Physical Education Administrators”, and of the “Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union”. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Canada Fitness Survey and has also served on the selection committee for the Canadian Olympic and Pan American Track and Field teams.
Although Herb served on numerous important committees and Task Forces, few of these had more impact on the University of Alberta, the City of Edmonton, and perhaps even on Canada, than his leadership role during the Commonwealth Games in 1978 and the World University Games of 1983, when he was a member of the Board of Governors.
Herb McLachlin, a teacher by vocation and avocation, a dedicated professional, coach, advisor, administrator, and most of all an outstanding physical educator – he has always given generously of his time, skills and abilities – with ever-present good humour and with a fine zest of life. For all of these qualities we honour Herbert John McLachlin tonight.
