How can Pat Galasso be described and assessed accurately and fairly as a professional person working in the field of physical education and sport? Perhaps the key to an accurate description lies in the term “professional commitment”. He is absolutely dedicated to our field to the extent that a disinterested observer might after careful analysis state, “for this man the profession of Physical Education and Sport is truly a vocation – a calling if we trace the word back to its Latin derivation and how appropriate in this instance.”
He is a scholarly person and was a fine student. He has a good sense of humor and a laugh that is unmatched in the history of the Association. He likes to run, but more at you than away from you. He is soft-spoken typically and yet rather volatile when he feels that the occasion demands his wrath. However, as he approaches middle age, he seems to have mellowed just a bit. His doctoral investigation related to scientific analysis of the start in one of his first loves – track and field. Subsequently, he switched his major loyalty to sport and physical activity philosophy, and has been one of its leading exponents on the Canadian scene. He can whistle like a bird, but stand back a few feet to protect your ear drums if you ask for a demonstration of this talent.
But we are really not honouring Pat Galasso because he can run, or whistle, or has a unique laugh, or can fix you with a gaze that requires no spoken word. We are honouring him because he has served our Association long and well, culminating with extraordinary service as President for two terms at a time when we really needed his help. Secondly, in addition to his national service to the field – even though he was not successful in changing our name to the Canadian Professional Association for Physical Activity – we are recognizing his significant service to Physical Education and Athletics for more than two decades at both the Secondary and University levels. Pat Galasso has left his mark on the disciplinary development of this field especially at the University level in Ontario. Thirdly, Pat Galasso, as Dean of what is now called the Faculty of Human Kinetics at the University of Windsor, has vastly exceeded the expectations of what might be expected ordinarily from an administrator in our field at that institution. Make no mistake about it – he has assisted in bringing our field along faster and farther than anyone could reasonably expect. He is a highly regarded member of the University of Windsor Community and, working with his colleagues the Faculty of Human Kinetics is a force on that campus.
Pat’s dedication and commitment has extended to his family in similar fashion to his commitment for Physical Education and Sport. Jan and Pat have succeeded in raising three of the finest offsprings that one could ask for – Kari, Linda and Mike. This family is a joy to behold.
There is much more that could be said. Many details have been omitted but the important points have been listed. “Dedicated, unremitting professional commitment” wraps it up quite well. If you are Pat Galasso’s good friend, you really do have a friend in the best sense of that most important word in our vocabulary. Pat Galasso is CAHPER’s true friend, and we are much happier, stronger, and vital because of his friendship. And it’s a safe bet that his friendship will continue for many more years. The Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation takes great pleasure and pride in recognizing its good friend, Pat Galasso, with the highest honour it can bestow on those who have served the profession with distinction – its HONOUR AWARD.
