Dr. W. A. R. (Bill) Orban is recognized as the leader of the physical fitness movement in Canada. His leadership in this area began with wonk on the now world-famous 5-BX Program. A native of Regina, Dr. Orban received a B.Sc. degree from McGill University in 1949 and then went on to obtain his M.S and Ph.D degrees from the University of Illinois in 1954 and 1957 respectively.

After working as a fitness consultant for the RCAF from 1956-1958, Dr. Orban took a position as head of the Department of Physical Education at the University of Saskatchewan. In 1966 he moved to a similar position at the bilingual University of Ottawa.

The research Committee of CAHPER was organized at the Hamilton Convention in 1962 under the leadership of Dr. Orban  and has continued to deve’op under his watchful eye. Dr. Orban has published numerous articles in the field of physiological research and is presently working on an exercise physiology text book. Since Dr. Orban is well known as a dynamic speaker, we look forward with anticipation to his address.

R. Tait McKenzie Memorial Addresses

He Held the Visions of Our Profession

I would like to discuss with you today not Tait McKenzie the man, nor even Tait McKenzie the professional physical educator, for his feats are not only well known but have been dealt with by more knowledgeable and skilled people than I.  What I would like to share with you is his vision for our profession and professional association as I perceive it which permeates all his works
WILLIAM A.R. ORBAN (June 14, 1967)

Dr. Bill Orban - Pioneer

His lengthy career has included many firsts: the first Canadian to be accepted into the University of California's physical education program; member of the first graduating class in physical education at McGill University; the first scientist to work on Canada's national fitness test, the cold-war forerunner of the Trudeau-era Participaction program.

Dr. Bill Orban - creator of the 5BX plan

Dr. William (Bill) Orban was often called a pioneer, but it's a description that barely scratches the surface of accomplishment he packed into his 81 years.
