Michael S. Yuhasz is one of that first wave of young, well-prepared physical educators, who over the past years have crested to prominence and eminence. His sense of purpose and mission took him relentlessly towards his goal – better well-being, skill and achievement for all.
He is a long-time professor at the University of Western Ontario. While his major interest has been in research he has always left the lab regularly to practice what he preached. And he has been especially concerned to set an example and lead in personal fitness programs.
He has had a notable career as an athlete in several sports. He had made a name for himself coaching, particularly in wrestling. And he has been recognized as an excellent teacher in schools, universities and private industry.
One of the first leaders in the research associated with the physiology of exercise and its application to improve fitness, he and Dr. Frank Hayden headed up the CAHPER Research Committee which produced the Fitness Performance Test.
He has been a leader beyond the walls of the university working with the Y.M.C.A., and local physical education groups, a Past President of Ontario Physical and Health Education Association, CAHPER Vice-President (Physical Education), President-Elect, and President (1969-1971). During his regime of aggressive leadership the Committees were revitalized. He learned to work with governments, producing a pattern for joint cooperative projects.
Michael is a doer, but even so he has taken time to write, to join others in the continued study of fitness and the application of physical activity in the rehabilitation of those afflicted by illness or disease.
Here is a distinguished leader of our profession who has taken the time to build a warm-hearted family, be devoted to his professional goals and a good companion among those who seek to better the life of all.
