His early origins are shrouded in mystery. All we know is that he was an outstanding athlete at both high school and college and a member of several North American championship high school relay teams. He took part in intercollegiate football, hockey and track and is an accomplished springboard diver. His son, Jack Junior, comes honestly by his hurdling fame for the father held intercollegiate championships in both high and low hurdles.
His undergraduate days were spent at McMaster where he earned his B.A. When the School of Physical and Health Education was established at the University of Toronto, he became one of its early grads. Subsequently he earned the Bachelor of Education degree at the University of Toronto and has partially completed his M.A. in Education at Wisconsin.
That he was a popular high school teacher, first in Toronto and then in Ottawa, occasions no surprise. His buoyant spirit and athletic good look combined with his natural gregariousness and love of boys make this inevitable. After a spell in the RCAF, where he attained the rank of Squadron Leader in charge of Physical Training – he returned to teaching as Supervisor for the Ottawa School Board. His final appointment was to the Ontario College of Education in charge of Physical Education with the rank of full professor. He has just finished a two-year stint, on leave from O.C.E., in charge of an armed forces school in Zweibrucken, Germany. This enabled him to represent CAHPER at international conferences on Physical education and Sport in Brussels, Wales and Rome, as well as visit outstanding physical education personalities and institutions all over Europe.
Jack is a Past President of the Ontario Physical Education Council – an organization which co-ordinates the work of teacher training institutes, teachers’ federation groups, universities and the Department of Education. He is also a past-president of the O.E.A. – Physical Education Section.
He has a busy pen – former editor of CAHPER’s Journal – co-author of the text “Building Health” and editor of the first “Water Safety Manual” for the Canadian Red Cross Society.
Among his many other interests he has been a rural school trustee and a busy executive for the Canadian Red Cross Society for over fifteen years. For two years he was the energetic President of the Ontario Division – a position which involved a great deal of committee work, travel and public speaking.
He retains an active interest in McMaster University as a member of the Senate and past-president of the Alumni Association. It is rumoured that he also helps Ivor Wynne recruit the football teams.
Camping is an item high on his agenda. At one time he was Supervisor of Camping for the Ontario Department of Education. Somehow he still manages to retain an active interest in organizations concerned with reforestation and conversation.
From this compendium you might be led to think that we were describing not one man but several. In spite of this diversity of talent, Jack is no “Jack of all trades” to earn the opprobrium “Master of None”. Whatever he does is done in superlative fashion and with a deceptive appearance of ease.

Remembering Jack Passmore
With the passing of Jack Passmore, CAHPERD lost one of its great pioneers and staunch supporters – in fact, Jack was the longest living member of CAHPERD. He joined our association in 1934, one year after CAHPERD was first formed.

By Jack Passmore ( May-June 1974)

“Nearly 40 years ago, while attending the Ontario College of Education, I had the good fortune to participate in one of the first national meetings of our Association. This rather historic meeting was held in Toronto in 1937, and was presided over by Dr Arthur Lamb, whom we still refer to as the “Father of Modern Physical Education in Canada”.
