Lorne Brown 1955-57

In Memoriam

Lorne E. Brown died at his home in Vancouver early in January 1976.

Lorne was a modern pioneer in the broad field of Health Education, Physical Education, Recreation and Outdoor Education.  Few in our field have made as great a contribution, particularly when effective and courageous leadership was needed most.

When he began his long teaching career there were very few school gymnasiums or swimming pools – no adequate physical education curriculums – and few teacher training programs worthy of the name.

Due to his vision, sense of purpose and dedication, Lorne Brown helped lead us out of the professional wilderness of the post-war period.  With the enthusiastic support of other national leaders, he charted a new course of direction for our profession and our Association that really began at the well-remembered Halifax convention in 1957.  in his report, he wrote: “I feel that as we continue to work at the practical problems of simplifying the constitution, of studying the relationship of branches of the national organization, or improving the Journal – to name only a few – we shall move forward to becoming a truly professional organization accepted by all those working in the field of physical education, health and recreation.”

During his career, among many other professional undertakings, he served as President of the British Columbia Camping Association, Chariman of the University of B.C. Camping, Outdoor Education and Conservation Committee, and was a fellow of the American School Health Association.  He also organized the First Commonwealth Conference in Physical Education in Vancouver in 1954.

The author of the citation in support of the CAHPER Honour Award which Lorne received in 1961 paid him the highest possible tribute: “ – The measure of Lorne Brown is in the quality of his work, the sincerity and earnestness of his endeavours, and in the quiet, unassuming and devoted service he has given his profession…(he held a)…neverending belief in the worth of physical education and the importance of the development of our profession.”

Lorne is survived by his wife May and family.
