Stuart
Bird 1948-1950
A member of this Association since 1933, Stuart is now a Life Member and a Pa st President.
Stuart grew up at Radisson, Saskatchewan with a hockey stick, a baseball glove and a .22 rifle. Orphaned at fifteen, he put himself through high school in the old town of Battleford by pitching bundles at harvest time and taking odd jobs. These and a spate of ‘permit’ teaching enabled him to attend Normal School in Saskatoon. His Bachelor of Science was obtained at the University of Washington and his Masters Degree in Physical Education at New York University under Dr. Jay B. Nash. While living in New York, Stuart was part time Program Director at the Y.M.C.A.
His years in the teaching profession took him as teacher and principal into various schools in Saskatchewan, and finally in 1930 to Regina as Director of Physical Education at the Balfour Technical School. Eight years later he was appointed Supervisor of Physical Education for the Edmonton Public School Board, where he served in this capacity for thirty years.
While Supervisor he organized the Western Supervisors’ Conference. He was instrumental in bringing to Alberta the Basic Movement approach to Physical Education and he started the semi-survival type Camp for Physical Education. In 1948 he originated Friday night Football and Basketball leagues for Edmonton High School boys and personally supervised them.
During the second World War he served for two years with the R.C.A.F. in the Sports and Physical Drill branch of Special Services.
Stuart has been President of the Edmonton CAHPER branch several times; also executive member of the Alberta Camping Association, a member of the Y.M.C.A. Toastmasters Club, and Secretary of the Edmonton Fish and Game Association. He has been very active in church and Sunday School work.
Currently he is 2nd Vice President of the Edmonton Fish and Game Association, and a member of the Alberta and Edmonton Gun Clubs Board of Directors. Since retirement he has won numerous trophies and prizes in Trap competitions in Canada and the United States.
Stuart has lived long enough to see the changes from “Drill” to “Physical Culture”, to “Physical Training” to “Physical Education”, a subject now recognized as one of the important contributions to the total educational process. He is indeed a worthy recipient of this honour.
