John Gilbard Lang, B. P.E., Supervisor of Physical Education, Montreal Protestant School Board; was born in St. Thomas, Ontario. Prior to graduating from Springfield College with a B.P.E. degree in 1924, Mr Lang served as assistant physical director in the Halifax YMCA.
After graduation he directed the Physical Education programme at Chestnut St. Junior High in Springfield for two years. He returned to Canada in 1926 to director the physical education programme at the University of Western Ontario until 1930. at hat time he went to Montreal to direct the physical education programme in Montreal Protestant Schools. Since 1933, Mr. Lang has been a guest lecturer at he McGill School of Physical Education.
Mr. Lang served as an R.A.F. pilot in the first great war, as Captain of the COTC at the University of Western Ontario, and as 2.I.C. of that unit. More recently he has served as Squadron Leader of the Montreal Protestant School Board No. 8 Wing of the Air Cadets of Canada.
Mr. Lang’s contribution to the development of our professional association, both at the provincial and at the National level cannot be estimated. His clear appreciation of the unique opportunities as well as the professional responsibilities of persons serving in the fields of health, physical education and recreation has enabled him to render signal service to the profession. It is inconceivable to imagine that Mr. Lang has ever refused an assignment which would further the aims and purposes of the professional field to which he has dedicated his life.
In 1940-41 Mr. Lang gave constructive and energetic leadership to the Quebec Branch of the CAHPER as its President. In 1942-44 he gained further distinction as National President of the CAHPER.
As a member of many executives and committees, Mr. Lang has achieved much to further the aims and purposes of the Association, nor can one overlook his “behind the scenes” efforts which have contributed so significantly to many projects in our field of interest; for example, the early planning and development of the Canada Fitness programme, his work in connection with the Winnipeg Conference in 1944, his contribution to the Montreal Conference in 1948.
Mr. Lang has been a member of the Honour Society Kappa Delta Pi since 1924, and served as President of the Graduate Society Phi Delta Tau in 1933.
In addition to his professional duties, Mr. Lang has been very active in a number of organizations holding such offices as:
Past President and Organizer, Montreal Protestant Men Teachers Association since 1933.
Secretary-Treasurer and Organizer, Montreal and District Protestant Sec. Schools Athletic Association (Now Greater Montreal Interscholastic Athletic Association), since 1938.
President, Approved Board of Basketball Officials of the Province of Quebec, since 1946.

Member, Montreal Track and Field Club.
Member, Sportsmen’s Association of Montreal.
Member, Air Force Veterans’ Association.
Member, Provincial Association of Protestant Teachers.
Member, American Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation.
Examiner, Royal Life Saving Society.
The many executive positions an special honours which have been given him are evidence of the high regard in which he is held by professional groups. But this is not the whole picture. Only those who know him personally can realize the extent of the great service and dynamic leadership which he has given them. His unfailing wit and humour, his wholehearted enthusiasm, have made his contributions unique and valuable.

It’s hard to believe that you have reached that ripe old chronological age, when, in fact, you are physically and mentally more alert than those of us who are still in the process of finding out what the profession is all about. Lord Brogham
