Garth Turtle 2004-2006

Garth was born in Alberta, raised in Ontario and lives on Prince Edward Island -- a typical military brat who has had the opportunity to set down roots throughout Canada, but is a Maritimer at heart.

“I would love to be an Islander," says Garth, "but if your not born here, you 'come from away!'”

Garth received his Bachelor of Physical Education and Education from Acadia University and taught grades 8-12 Physical Education and biology for 24 years in Summerside before moving to the Department of Education to take on the co-roles of PE/HE Curriculum Consultant and Executive Director of the PEI School Athletic Association. He served as on the Executive of the PEISAA for 22 years, five of those as President.

Working in leadership roles at the local and provincial level led Garth to the National scene, where he served as the PEI Board member to CAHPERD and eventually as President of CAHPERD. He also served a term as President of the Canadian School Sport Federation and was an original member of the Board of Directors for the Coalition for Active Living, serving four years as treasurer.

Garth has been honoured to receive the PEI School Athletic Association Award of Merit and Charlie Ballem Builders’s Award, as well as the Canadian School Sport Federation Distinguished Service Award and Executive Leadership Award. He was selected to the Acadia University Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.

A decent athlete in his day, Garth has transferred that love of playing to coaching. Known as a tough coach who has high expectations of his players, his teams are successful on the fields of play, winning numerous provincial and regional Championships, but it is his success at helping develop good responsible people that he is most proud of.

“Athletics is not about the score but about the people involved,” he says.

Garth lives in Summerside, PEI with his wife Lynn and has two daughters - Michelle, who currently lives in Regina and Kristen, who lives in Halifax.
